An update to a standard on woven wire filter cloth (sometimes called Dutch weave) aims to better meet the needs of the filtration industry. Members of the ASTM International committee on particle and spray characterization (E29) changed the standard from a guide to a specification that notably includes material tolerances.

Generally, filter cloth is made from metal or metal alloy wires which help separate solids from fluids. It is rated by its particle size and retention capability.

The revised standard (E2814-18) incorporates standard terms and definitions, common technical considerations, and normal manufacturing tolerances. It also includes alternative acceptance criteria based on a desired pore size determined by:
