Highlights

(*) The positively charged γ-Al2O3 neutralized the negative surface charge of biochar.

(*) Sorption experiments showed that at pH 7.5 the Zn sorption capacity followed the order: γ-Al2O3 >mixture>biochar, which was reversed at pH 5.5.

(*) Biochar depressed Zn-Al LDH precipitation in a mixture of biochar + γ-Al2O3.

(*) Al released from γ-Al2O3 was sorbed in parallel with Zn on biochar to form Zn-Al silicate, rather than forming Zn-Al LDH on the γ-Al2O3 surface.
