The chemical spill at a Birmingham Water Works water treatment plant that sent 55 people to the hospital Wednesday morning has been contained, Water Works officials announced Wednesday afternoon.
Somehow, two chemicals commonly used to treat water, sodium hypochlorite and ferric sulfate, were accidentally mixed, creating a toxic gas.
