On 5th June 2020 Norway and Denmark submitted a proposal to the European Chemicals Agency, ECHA, for a harmonized classification and labelling (CLH) for Tetrabromobisphenol-A (TBBPA). The proposal is to add Carc. 1B (H350) to the current classification of TBBPA (Aquatic Acute 1 (H400), Aquatic Chronic 1 (H410)). TBBPA currently is self-classified as a carcinogen category 2 based on existing scientific data.
On 16th November 2020, ECHA opened a public consultation on the proposal which closes on the 29th January 2021. Subsequently, the dossier will be reviewed by ECHA’s Risk Assessment Committee (RAC). This milestone marks the beginning of the process and it could take two years before any inclusion of a formal classification in Annex VI of the EU CLP regulation.
