Although it is well known that nickel can cause skin allergies, the substance is still used in products we come into close contact with in everyday life. It is the amount of nickel that is transferred to the skin that determines whether we develop an allergy. Therefore, some of these products are provided with a coating to prevent or reduce nickel release to an acceptable level. The Danish Environmental Protection Agency has examined the quality and durability of such coatings in more detail.

With this project, the Danish Environmental Protection Agency wanted to take a closer look at which types of coatings are used on common and relatively cheap consumer products, as well as to check how well they prevent nickel release from products containing nickel. Studs, piercing jewelery and toys from Danish, European and non-European stores were examined.
