In a recent update on December 14, 2023, the Executive Director of the Australian Inventory of Industrial Chemicals (AICIS) has modified the terms of the Inventory listing for a specific chemical. The chemical in question is identified by the CAS Number 91845-48-6 and goes by the name Santalum austrocaledonicum, ext.
The changes in the listing were made in accordance with section 93 of the Industrial Chemicals Act 2019.
Specifically, the Executive Director varied the terms to accommodate an application from an introducer to adjust the allowable end use concentration of the chemical in various cosmetic and household products. The chemical had been previously assessed (LTD/2142) and was already listed on the Australian Inventory of Industrial Chemicals.
The updated terms now allow for an increased concentration of up to 5% in household products, 0.1% in hairspray, 0.41% in fine fragrances, 1.5% in rinse-off cosmetic products, and 0.23% in leave-on cosmetic products.
Introducers and applicants are now required to notify the Executive Director within 20 working days if the importation volume exceeds one tonne per annum for the assessed chemical, if there are changes in the final use concentration, if the function or use of the chemical has changed significantly, if the chemical has begun to be manufactured in Australia, or if additional information regarding adverse effects on human health or the environment becomes available.
The Executive Director will then evaluate whether an assessment of the introduction is necessary.
