Symrise AG, a German fragrance and flavoring manufacturer, has appealed against a decision by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) concerning its registration of the substance (E)-anethole. ECHA has requested Symrise and other registrants of the substance to submit information regarding animal welfare and compliance checks. Symrise is asking for the Board of Appeal to partially annul the requirement for a pre-natal developmental toxicity study via gavage administration, and an extended one-generation reproductive toxicity study via oral gavage administration. Symrise has also requested the annulment of the decision that requires the submission of the required information by 21 October 2024. The company has claimed that ECHA exceeded its competence, breached relevant articles, and Symrise’s right to be heard.
