EU Scientific Committee Evaluates Safety of Titanium Dioxide in Oral Cosmetic Products

The Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) has reviewed the safety of various grades of titanium dioxide (TiO2) used in oral cosmetic products. They found that, except for two nano grades (RM09 and RM11), the genotoxicity potential of most TiO2 grades cannot be excluded. The SCCS recommends further studies to evaluate the safety of these substances, especially regarding their absorption and cellular effects in the oral mucosa. The committee also advises maintaining current safety limits for TiO2 in inhalation and dermal exposure while recommending the development of specific TiO2 grade specifications for cosmetics to ensure consumer safety.
