The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has released an IUCLID dataset containing information on 528 approved pharmaceuticals, including data from both animal studies and human research.

This dataset supports the development of alternatives to animal testing. In addition, they have added data for 180 new substances to the dataset, which already included information on 348 substances published earlier in the year. The expanded dataset provides structured toxicological information for both animals and humans, benefiting both the industry and the research community. This data aids in assessing the toxicity of chemically similar compounds, aiming to reduce the need for animal testing. It can also be used to create predictive models and compare animal and human data. ECHA has also introduced a customized toxicological ontology, a standardized dictionary of terms, to help users classify and organize the effects of chemicals.

This ontology incorporates human and mammalian ontologies with new terms, resulting in over 20,000 new standardized terms.
