WASHINGTON (May 8, 2019) – The American Chemistry Council released the following statement about today’s House Committee on Energy and Commerce hearing regarding legislation that would ban the use of Asbestos:

Asbestos was announced as one of the first 10 chemicals to undergo risk evaluations as required by the 2016 amendments to TSCA. The draft of the asbestos evaluation is expected to be released for public comment and peer review later this year. The deadline for the final risk evaluation is December 2019.

“A blanket ban on asbestos use without the benefit of EPA’s completed risk evaluation undermines the process that was the basis of Congress’ bipartisan agreement in 2016. Therefore, we oppose H.R. 1603 and urge legislators to allow the agency to both complete its risk evaluation of asbestos and implement any necessary risk management requirements based on that evaluation.
