The European Commission has released a draft Delegated Regulation, supplementing Regulation (EU) 2023/1542, to establish the methodology for calculating and verifying recycling efficiency and material recovery rates from waste batteries. This regulation aims to support the implementation of Article 71 of the Batteries Regulation by setting clear guidelines for how recycling efficiency should be measured, verified, and documented.

The proposal, notified as G/TBT/N/EU/1088, is designed to enhance the protection of human health and the environment by improving the recycling and recovery process for batteries. The draft also outlines the documentation format required to ensure transparency and standardization across EU member states.

The consultation period was opened on October 4, 2024.

This regulation is expected to significantly impact battery manufacturers and recyclers across the EU, requiring compliance with new efficiency and recovery standards.
