South Korea Introduces Safety Verification for Risky Consumer Chemical Products

The Republic of Korea, through its Ministry of Environment, has notified the World Trade Organization of a new regulation titled "Designation of Consumer Chemical Products subject to Safety Verification, and Safety and Labeling Standards Thereof". Spanning 177 pages and written in Korean, this comprehensive document details the establishment of a committee to assess consumer chemical products that may be mistakenly identified as food, and it mandates clear labeling to indicate changes in product weight and capacity.

The purpose of this regulation is to improve consumer information and ensure proper labeling of chemical products, enhancing consumer safety. It is slated for adoption on May 31, 2024, and is expected to come into force on January 1, 2025. Stakeholders are invited to submit their comments within 60 days from the date of notification.
