SIN List update and launch of a new tool for sustainable substitution

The SIN (Substitute It Now!) List is a tool developed by NGOs to speed up the substitution of hazardous chemicals. The chemicals on the SIN List have been identified by ChemSec as Substances of Very High Concern based on the criteria established by the EU chemicals regulation REACH.

On the 8th of October around 100 stakeholders gathered in Brussels for the one-day event "SINnovation – keys for the future". Among the speakers were high ranking representatives from authorities, the scientific community, chemical industry, downstream users and financial investors. The aim of the event was to present the updated version of the SIN List and to launch SINimilarity, a tool for identifying SIN-like chemicals.

An overview of the new substances introduced in the SIN List is available hereafter. By clicking on the substances you can have access to the respective world regulatory maps.

Chemicals selected for their endocrine disruptive properties

Chemicals selected for their PBT or vPvB properties

Chemicals newly classified as being carcinogenic, mutagenic or toxic to reproduction (CMR)

Substances identified as SVHCs for the Candidate List, not previously on the SIN List)

To give a better overview of the chemicals, the SIN List has now also been divided into 31 groups based on structure and toxic properties. Examples of these groups are bisphenols, phthalates and perfluorinated compounds. The grouping has also served as the base for a new tool – SINimilarity. This online tool makes it possible to search among 80,000 chemicals and find out if they are similar to any of the chemicals on the SIN List.
