The Scientific Committees on Health, Environmental, and Emerging Risks (SCHEER) are set to convene for their 6th Plenary Meeting, scheduled for October 6, 2023. The agenda for the meeting includes the following key topics:

  1. Mandates for Adoption:

    • Technical advice for amending annexes to Council Recommendation 1999/519/EC, with a Q&A session featuring the mandating Unit SANTE B1.
    • Update from the Working Group on technical advice for amending Annexes to Council Recommendation 1999/519/EC.
    • Discussion on Environmental Quality Standards (EQS) by DG ENV, with the last opinions expected in 2024.

  2. Opinions for Adoption:

    • Preliminary Opinion on EMF II (low frequencies).
    • Final report on FORENV cycle V focusing on water resilience.
    • Final Opinion in support of a targeted revision of Annexes III and IV of Directive 2010/63/EU concerning the protection of animals used for scientific purposes (adopted on 27 September via written procedure).

  3. Opinions for Discussion/Ongoing Work:

    • Addressing issues related to TiO2 in toys, including the final Opinion and a request for SCHEER endorsement for a final scientific article publication.
    • Discussion on TiO2 in cosmetics, with preliminary scientific advice drafted by SCCS.
    • Updating Guidelines on the benefit-risk assessment of phthalates in certain medical devices, particularly those with carcinogenic, mutagenic, toxic to reproduction (CMR), or endocrine-disrupting (ED) properties.
    • Self-mandate discussions regarding the update of the SCHEER Weight of Evidence document and the Emerging risks statement.
