European Commission Communication on Nickel Standards in Accordance with REACH

The European Commission has released a communication (C/2023/1604) as part of the ongoing implementation of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, commonly known as REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation, and Restriction of Chemicals). This communication specifically addresses the publication of titles and references of European standards under entry 27, focusing on nickel, of Annex XVII to REACH.

The standards outlined in the communication are crucial for ensuring compliance with restrictions concerning nickel release. They include references such as:

1. EN 1811:2023 - Reference test method for release of nickel from post assemblies inserted into pierced parts of the human body and articles intended for direct and prolonged skin contact. Superseded Standard: EN 1811:2011+A1:2015

2. EN 12472:2020 - Method for the simulation of accelerated wear and corrosion to detect nickel release from coated items. Superseded Standard: EN 12472:2005+A1:2009 

3. EN 16128:2015 - Reference method for testing spectacle frames and sunglasses for nickel release. Superseded Standard: EN 16128:2011

The standards are issued by European Standardisation Organisations (ESOs), with references to CEN (European Committee for Standardization) in this context.
