The Ordinance of the Federal Department of Home Affairs on Materials and Objects Intended to Come into Contact with Foodstuffs (OMatKon) defines the requirements that these materials and objects must meet in order not to pose a danger to human health.

This ordinance applies to all materials and objects intended to come into contact with foodstuffs, with the exception of materials and objects that are in direct contact with foodstuffs for less than 5 minutes.

The materials and objects must be manufactured in accordance with good manufacturing practices (GMPs) and must comply with the global and specific migration limits (LMGs and LMSs) set out in the ordinance.

Plastic materials and objects must also meet specific requirements, including those relating to authorized substances, specific migration limits and the requirements applicable to plastic layers that do not come into direct contact with foodstuffs.

Recycled plastic materials and objects must also meet specific requirements, including those relating to the authorization of the recycling process, the specifications of the recycled plastic and the maintenance of documentation.
