ASTM International’s committee on analytical chemistry for metals, ores, and related materials (E01) is developing a new standard guide for elemental analysis through spectrometry.

The proposed guide (WK69595) will provide test methods, practices, and more for chemical and spectrochemical analysis. According to ASTM International member Michael DeLeon, type standardization is a decades-long fixture of chemical analysis in metals, and this standard guide is a step in codifying the process so that users can improve their calibration models.

“This new guide covers use of type standardization for temporary modification of an established, general-purpose, analytical calibration,” says DeLeon. “The goal is to obtain better test results than may be possible using the general-purpose calibration, however ‘better’ is defined in a given case.”

DeLeon says that every user or manufacturer of metals, along with regulatory bodies like NADCAP, will find this new guide useful as part of their analytical chemistry practices.

“We have a significant group from industry and elsewhere who are helping to develop this standard and are always welcoming of new people to aid in its development,” says DeLeon.
