UN Body Recommends Global Action on Hazardous Chemicals: Decisions and Recommendations from POPRC-19 Meeting
At the 19th Persistent Organic Pollutant Review Committee (POPRC-19) meeting, expert scientists recommended international measures to eliminate two hazardous chemicals, medium-chain chlorinated paraffins, commonly used in various industrial products, and long-chain perfluorocarboxylic acids, part of the PFAS family. These chemicals, identified as posing significant risks to human health and the environment, may still be used in specific circumstances, with detailed exemptions to be considered at the 2025 Conference of the Parties to the Stockholm Convention. Additionally, the highly toxic pesticide 'chlorpyrifos' was adopted for risk assessment, given its adverse effects, especially on children and pregnant women, with a recommendation for listing to be considered in the future.
