Dr. Elke Pieper and a team in the Product Research and Nanotechnology Unit at the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) are researching the health risks of smoking alternatives such as e-cigarettes, heat-not-burn tobacco products and e-shishas. The chemist focusses especially on the health risk of e-cigarette ingredients.  

The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) is an independent scientific institution within the portfolio of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) in Germany. It advises the German federal government and German federal states ("Laender") on questions of food, chemical and product safety. The BfR conducts its own research on topics that are closely linked to its assessment tasks.
