The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) Enforcement Forum is gearing up for a pivotal project aimed at ensuring suppliers comply with the requirement to notify national authorities about hazardous chemical mixtures. This initiative is crucial as it enables poison centres to access vital information, allowing them to provide informed and effective emergency responses. The verification of these notifications, along with the inspection of labels and safety data sheets of the mixtures, is slated to commence in January 2025, spanning six months with findings to be reported by the end of the year.
Simultaneously, the Enforcement Forum is setting the stage for another harmonized enforcement project (REF-13) focusing on online sales, which will also kick off in 2025. This project will scrutinize products sold online to ensure they do not contain substances restricted under the REACH and POPs regulations. Inspectors will also check that mixtures are classified, labeled, and packaged according to the Classification, Labelling, and Packaging (CLP) Regulation, with all pertinent information adequately displayed online.
The initiatives represent ECHA's ongoing commitment to safeguard human health and the environment by reinforcing compliance across the board. Through these projects, the Enforcement Forum, including its biocides subgroup, continues to coordinate enforcement actions across the EU and EEA, thus maintaining a level playing field for businesses and ensuring public safety through stringent regulatory oversight. The next meeting of the forum is scheduled for June 2024, where further details and progress on these enforcement projects will likely be discussed.
