The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has added nine chemicals to the Candidate List of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHCs) due to their hazardous properties. These chemicals are used in products such as flame retardants, paints and coatings, inks and toners, plasticisers and in the manufacture of pulp and paper.

The substances, which now bring the total number of entries on the Candidate List to 233, may be placed on the Authorisation List in the future. This would prohibit the use of these chemicals unless companies receive authorisation from the European Commission to continue their use.

The chemicals were confirmed for inclusion on the list by the ECHA’s Member State Committee. Companies are responsible for managing the risks associated with these chemicals and must provide their customers and consumers with information on how to use them safely.
