The opening of the Hazardous Waste Program Registry is scheduled for November 15th, 2022. Prior this date The Resource Productivity and Recovery Authority (RPRA) will continue to develop materials and guidance for this program.

Ontario’s Hazardous Waste Program ensures industrial hazardous or liquid waste is properly stored, transported, recycled, recovered and disposed to protect public health and the environment. Under this program, generators, carriers and receivers of hazardous and liquid industrial waste must report their waste management activities to the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks.

On April 21, 2020, the Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks directed the Authority to prepare a digital reporting service for the Hazardous Waste Program. The new reporting service will support the ministry’s goal of ensuring that hazardous waste is safely managed, while making it easier for the regulated community to report their hazardous waste management activities.

On April 12, 2021, the Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks issued new directions to the Authority extending the launch date of the Hazardous Waste Digital Reporting Service from January 1, 2022 to January 1, 2023. The Authority advised the Minister to extend the timeline by one year to ensure the regulated community has sufficient time to adapt to the new system and so the Authority can engage stakeholders in meaningful consultation to understand their needs throughout the development of the digital reporting service.

The ministry’s Hazardous Waste Program initiative is unrelated to the wind up of the Municipal Hazardous or Special Waste Program currently operated by Stewardship Ontario, Product Care Association, Automotive Materials Stewardship and SodaStream or the new Hazardous and Special Products Regulation.
