Scientific Advice on the Safety of Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) in Cosmetic Products | Public consultation closes on 6 February 2023

The European Commission has published a scientific opinion on the safety of titanium dioxide (TiO2) in cosmetic products. The preliminary opinion is open for comments until 6 February 2024. The opinion concludes that more research is needed to fully assess the risks of using TiO2 in cosmetic products, particularly in oral and inhalation products.

The opinion was based on a review of scientific literature and data. The reviewers found that there is some evidence that TiO2 may be harmful to health if ingested or inhaled. However, the evidence is limited and more research is needed to confirm these findings.

The Commission will take the opinion into account when making decisions about the future use of TiO2 in cosmetic products. In the meantime, consumers should be aware of the potential risks of using TiO2 products and should follow the instructions on the product labels.
