Australia Adds New Industrial Chemical used in cosmetics and fragrances to Inventory Following Assessment Certificate

In a recent development, the Australian government has included a new industrial chemical in the Australian Inventory of Industrial Chemicals under section 83 of the Industrial Chemicals Act 2019. The addition comes into effect as of January 2, 2024.

Here are the details of the newly listed chemical:

This chemical has undergone a comprehensive assessment, and its scope of application has been defined as follows:

  1. As a fragrance component imported into Australia: Up to 1 tonne/year.

  2. As imported in fragrance formulations:

    • Up to 1% concentration for reformulation into end-use cosmetic and household products in continuous action air fresheners.
    • Up to 0.3% concentration for reformulation into end-use cosmetic and household products in fine fragrances.
    • Up to 0.1% concentration for reformulation into end-use cosmetic and household products in instant action air fresheners.
    • Up to 0.03% concentration for reformulation into end-use cosmetic and household products in other cosmetic and household products.

  3. As imported in finished products for sale in:

    • Continuous action air fresheners at up to 0.3% concentration.
    • Fine fragrances at up to 0.1% concentration.
    • Instant action air fresheners at up to 0.03% concentration.
    • Other cosmetic and household products at up to 0.01% concentration.

The government's decision to include this chemical in the Inventory aligns with the ongoing efforts to regulate and monitor industrial chemicals to ensure safety and compliance with established standards. Stakeholders involved in the import and use of this chemical are urged to adhere to the specified concentration limits outlined in the assessment certificate.
