Summary - Lead and cadmium may transfer into food from ceramic table and kitchenware. Legislation on ceramic food contact materials requires them to be safe and sets limits for these metals. New scientific evidence indicates that these limits should be revised so as to provide adequate health protection. This initiative will fix lower limits for lead and cadmium and possibly set limits for other metals. It also aims to align EU law on vitreous materials, i.e. on glass and enameled metals.
