Canada publishes regulatory framework paper for plastics, including recycled content and labelling rules

Canada has released a regulatory framework paper proposing recycled content and labelling rules for plastics in line with its zero plastic waste agenda. The document details recycled content requirements and labelling rules for recyclability and compostability of plastic packaging and certain single-use plastics. The framework outlines a cooperation between all levels of government and industry leaders, with the proposed regulations set to be published in Canada Gazette, Part I, before the end of 2023. The regulations would include recycled content requirements and recyclability and compostability labelling rules, with an aim to incentivise design for recyclability and improve the quality of plastic supply to the recycling stream.
