The U.S. Postal Service has proposed a rule, published on December 15, 2023, to amend its mailing standards for hazardous materials (HAZMAT) outer packaging and nonregulated toxic materials. The proposed changes include specific outer packaging strength standards for HAZMAT shipments, the allowance of poly or padded bags for shipments containing lithium batteries (meeting specific criteria), and the removal of quantity restrictions for nonregulated toxic materials to align with industry standards, with comments due by January 16, 2024.
