The Ministry of the Environment (MMA) has joined forces with the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) to promote environmental conservation actions associated with the most popular sports modality in Brazil and worldwide. The Green Cup, a pioneer championship in sustainability, ends on Tuesday (May 16) in Belém, with complete management of solid waste from games and other environmental actions.
The final will be at the Mangueirão Stadium in Belém (PA), between the teams Luverdense (MT) and Paysandu (PA) and will be attended by authorities. According to the environment minister, Sarney Filho, the support of the MMA to the Green Cup is a way to extend the reach of the environmental agendas to the population, especially young people, through environmental education actions. The championship closing schedule includes football and conscious consumption workshops for children.
Recyclable materials cooperatives will collect the material consumed and discarded by the fans during the match. So far, a ton of recycled material have been collected, including cardboard, PETbottles, plastic cans and plastic cups. The initiative is based on the premise of sustainable development and solidarity economy of the National Policy on Solid Waste.
The sustainable championship, which is in its fourth edition, was considered the first carbon zero competition in world football. The carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted with the accomplishment of the games will be compensated with the planting of 1.4 thousand native seedlings in states of the Legal Amazon.
