Europe will continue major funding of harmful intensive farming practices until at least 2027. The most contentious parts of a new €54 billion-a-year EU agriculture policy 2023-2027 have just been finalised and negotiations on the few remaining aspects will end in the coming hours, the EEB understands from sources close to the talks.

In a decade seen as crucial for reversing a range of environmental crises, a failure to shift support to ecological farming is a major policy failure, green groups said. Agriculture is a leading cause of soil loss and wildlife collapse and is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions.
