Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/2055 restricting synthetic polymer microparticles on their own or intentionally added to mixtures - better known as “the microplastics restriction” - started applying on 17 October 2023.

The EU Commission is now working on a detailed Q&A document to help with the implementation of the new rules. The document is expected to be made available by the end of 2023.

Meanwhile, while waiting for the Q&A document to be ready, the EU Commission shared its current thinking on the application of the microplastics restriction, including to plastic glitter on its own and in products, addresing questions such as:

- Why does the Commission want to ban glitter?

- Is the sale of glitter completely banned as of 17 October 2023?
