The European Union set out a survey on the Regulation (EU) 2017/852 that addresses the whole life cycle of mercury from primary mining to its final disposal as waste. The Regulation  mainly implements the Minamata Convention (named after the city of Minamata in Japan where the release of methylmercury in the industrial wastewater from a chemical factory caused mercury poisoning of the nearby living population, resulting in serious neurological damages), but also strengthens mercury-related measures from earlier European legal acts (e.g. Regulation 1102/2008) and further develops the legal framework in a number of areas. Here is the EEB’s position on the public consultation and how it is implemented.
