New ASTM International Standard Will Help Detect Presence of Silver Nanomaterials in Textiles

A new ASTM International standard will provide structured guidance in deciphering whether silver nanoparticles are present in certain products. Committee E56 on Nanotechnology developed the standard (E3025, Guide for Detection and Characterization of Manufactured Silver Nanomaterials in Textiles). It will make it possible to compare measurements and data that can be crucial for manufacturers, consumers and regulators.

ASTM member Aleksandr Stefaniak notes that silver, which has been used as an antimicrobial compound for centuries, is now being used in the form of nanomaterials that are being manufactured into consumer products such as textiles. These textiles range from apparel, medical devices, and bedding, making these nanomaterials potentially a part of our everyday lives. 

Being able to determine whether silver nanomaterials exist in a product is important because it verifies whether the production process is working correctly and controls internal quality

This is the first standard created by ASTM’s Subcommittee on Nano-Enabled Consumer Products (E56.06). The subcommittee is now working on another proposed standard (WK52417, Test Method for Detection and Quantification of Total silver in Textiles by ICP Analysis). The subcommittee is welcoming experts in the area to join their effort.
