The purpose of the project was to build knowledge of fluorides in cosmetic products and to clarify whether the use of cosmetic products containing certain fluorine substances poses a health risk to consumers.

The project focuses on perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl compounds (PFAS), which are also known as fluoroalkyls or only fluorides. PFAS and other fluorine compounds are used in a variety of cosmetic products such as foundations, moisturizers, eye shadow, powder and lipstick / pomade and shaving cream. PFAS occurs both as desired ingredients in cosmetic products and as unintended impurities and degradation products from the production of the PFAS precursors used in certain cosmetic products. The report contains analyzes of total organic fluorine (TOrF) and selected perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in 17 different cosmetic products with declared content of PFAS or other organic fluorine compounds. The report also includes an assessment of whether the content of the selected PFASs can pose a risk.
