The International Flavors & Fragrances's Appeal Against ECHA's Risk Assessment of Aralkylaldehydes Dismissed as Inadmissible

The International Flavors & Fragrances (IFF), a Netherlands-based company, has appealed to the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) against a document published on September 21, 2022, which identifies future risks and steps needed for a group of chemicals called aralkylaldehydes. This group includes 3-(p-cumenyl)propionaldehyde, an organic compound that is used in the production of fragrances and flavors, in perfumes, soaps, and other personal care products, as well as in food and beverages.

IFF, which is a registrant of 3-(p-cumenyl)propionaldehyde, is requesting the Board of Appeal to annul the document, to stop ECHA from developing any further documents without respecting proper procedures, and to refund the appeal fee.

By decision of 17 January 2023, the Chairman of the Board of Appeal dismissed the appeal as inadmissible since the Board does not have the authority or competence to rule on the specific appeal i

IFF may need to take additional steps or pursue alternative avenues for resolving the issue.
