EU executive set to drop ‘non-toxic environment strategy’

Incoming environment commissioner Virginijus Sinkevicius was non-committal when repeatedly pressed during his recent parliamentary hearing to state his intentions regarding the strategy, which was due for delivery “by 2018” under the seventh EU Environmental Action Programme (EAP). He eventually suggested it would be part of a broader ‘zero-pollution’ goal.

Speaking in Brussels on Thursday as the International Chemical Secretariat (ChemSec) presented an update to its widely used 'SIN list' of harmful substances, EU director for circular economy and green growth Kestutis Sadauskas recognised the Commission had missed the deadline, but said it had already done much of what was required by the EAP.
