The European Commission has recently released a draft Commission Implementing Decision stating the disapproval of silver copper zeolite as an active substance for use in biocidal products falling under product-type 4. This decision comes in accordance with Regulation (EU) No 528/2012 of the European Parliament and of the Council.

The draft decision outlines that the efficacy of silver copper zeolite has not been adequately demonstrated for its intended use involving the incorporation of the substance into food contact materials. Extensive testing and research have revealed concerns regarding the potential risks associated with the consumption of food that has come into contact with treated polymers containing silver copper zeolite. Regrettably, no suitable risk mitigation measures have been identified to address these risks.

As a result, the European Union has decided not to approve silver copper zeolite as an existing active substance for use in biocidal products falling within product-type 4, which primarily encompasses products used in food and feed areas. This decision is based on the need to ensure the safety and protection of human health.

The European Union, as the notifying member, aims to uphold the highest standards of efficacy and safety for biocidal products used within its jurisdiction. The decision reflects the commitment to thorough evaluation and stringent regulations concerning active substances and their use in biocidal products.

It is important to note that this decision is a draft, and interested parties and stakeholders will have an opportunity to provide feedback and submit their views on the matter. The final decision will be made after considering all relevant inputs and scientific evidence.
