On July 24, 2024, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposed designating five chemicals as High-Priority Substances for risk evaluation under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). This initiative aligns with the Biden-Harris Administration’s commitment to environmental justice, public health protection, and the Cancer Moonshot mission.

The five chemicals proposed are:

  1. Vinyl Chloride (CASRN 75-01-4)
  2. Acetaldehyde (CASRN 75-07-0)
  3. Acrylonitrile (CASRN 107-13-1)
  4. Benzenamine (CASRN 62-53-3)
  5. 4,4’-methylene bis(2-chloroaniline) (MBOCA) (CASRN 101-14-4)

These chemicals, associated with cancer and used in plastic production, will undergo risk evaluations if the designations are finalized. The EPA aims to assess the hazards, exposure potential, and environmental impact of these substances to ensure community health and safety.

Public comments on the proposed designations will be accepted for 90 days following their publication in the Federal Register.
