The European Union is currently seeking public input on the regulation of Persistent Organic Pollutants, specifically focusing on perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) and its derivatives. The initiative is in line with Regulation (EU) 2019/1021, which enforces the EU's commitments under the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants. The proposed measure aims to reduce the maximum concentration of PFOS allowed as an unintentional trace contaminant in substances, mixtures, and articles. Additionally, the regulation seeks to eliminate the last specific exemption allowed in the EU for PFOS, as it is deemed no longer necessary.

This initiative is categorized as a delegated regulation, and stakeholders and the public have the opportunity to provide feedback during the open feedback period, which runs from December 4, 2023, to January 1, 2024 (midnight Brussels time). The upcoming Commission adoption is planned for the first quarter of 2023.
