In September 2012, representatives of three sectors met with the Swedish Chemicals Agency and Minister of the Environment, Lena Ek, to discuss continued work on dialogues and targets for the sectors dealing with toys, textiles, and cosmetic and hygienic products.

The dialogues are complementary to the legislation in order to increase the protection of children. We hope this will contribute to inspiring more companies to follow after reducing the risks connected with chemicals in goods, says the Director-General of the Swedish Chemicals Agency, Nina Cromnier.

The targets concern:

  • Company restrictions and phase out of, for example, allergens and sensitisers  from products used by children.
  • Exchange of knowledge between companies, government authorities and the research area.
  • Information activities aimed at companies or consumers.

Companies participating in the dialogues expressed the importance of being ahead in this work. The complex issues on chemicals were considered particularly important.

Background:

he starting point for the dialogue work was a meeting in May 2011 between the Minister of the Environment Andreas Carlgren and the toys, textile and cosmetic and hygienic products sectors. During 2012, these sectors and the Swedish Chemicals Agency have been working to identify possible targets for the respective sector.

The dialogues is part of the action plan for a toxic-free everyday environment. The Swedish Government has assigned the Swedish Chemicals Agency with the task to support companies and sectors wishing to be in the forefront in work to phase out hazardous substances.
