120+ Associations Urge Preservation of Internal Market Legal Basis for Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation

Brussels, 17 April 2023 - A joint statement signed by over 120 associations expresses concern over the potential erosion or split of the legal basis of the Regulation on Packaging and Packaging Waste. The introduction of the internal market legal basis in the 1994 PPWD aimed to address internal market barriers and provide high environmental protection. However, unilateral and divergent national packaging requirements have led to market barriers, environmental trade-offs, and losses in economies of scale. The statement urges co-legislators to preserve the internal market legal basis, best suited to serve environmental and economic objectives.
