As from 1 January 2026, the Commission intends to extend the list of mercury-added products whose export from, import into and manufacture in the EU is prohibited.

This will align EU legislation with the Minamata Convention on Mercury and help phase out the use of mercury in these products worldwide, thus offering further protection for the environment and human health.

The initiative will also ensure a level playing field in particular for EU lamp producers.
