Outcome of the 18th meeting of the Persistent Organic Pollutants Review Committee (POPRC.18) - 26 to 30 September 2022



The eighteenth meeting of the POPs Review Committee of the Stockholm Convention took place from 26 to 30 September 2022 in Rome, Italy, back-to-back with the eighteenth meeting of the Chemical Review Committee of the Rotterdam Convention.

The key outcomes of the meeting are as follows:

(*) Adopted the risk management evaluation for Dechlorane Plus and recommended listing Dechlorane Plus in Annex A with specific exemptions

(*) Adopted the risk management evaluation for UV-328and recommended listing UV-328 in Annex A with specific exemptions

(*) Adopted the risk profile for chlorinated paraffins with carbon chain lengths in the range C14-17 and chlorination levels at or exceeding 45 per cent chlorine by weight, established an intersessional working group to prepare a draft risk management evaluation, invited Parties and observers to submit Annex F information on socio-economic consideration

(*) Adopted the risk profile for long-chain perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs), their salts and related compounds, established an intersessional working group to prepare a draft risk management evaluation, invited Parties and observers to submit Annex F information on socio-economic consideration

(*) Deferred the decision on the risk profile for chlorpyrifos to POPRC-19, established an intersessional working group to revise the draft risk profile, invited Parties and observers to submit information on chlorpyrifos

The Committee also finalized the reports on information related to specific exemptions for decabromodiphenyl ether and short-chain chlorinated paraffins; and the report on the assessment of alternatives to perfluorooctane sulfonic acid, its salts and perfluorooctane sulfonyl fluoride.

Furthermore, the Committee decided to continue its work on the development of a draft document on long-range environmental transport through an intersessional working group.

The Stockholm Convention COP-11 in May 2023 will consider the recommendations by the POPs Review Committee on the listing of methoxychlor, Dechlorane Plus and UV-328, as well as the recommendations related to decaBDE, SCCPs and PFOS, its salts and PFOSF.
