Ozone-Depleting Substances (ODS)

Ethiopia is a member of the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer and the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. On 5 July 2019, Ethiopia moreover ratified the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol. In the framework of the Protocol, the country is in the process of phasing-out the trade in and use of ozone-depleting substances (ODS). Trade in chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) is prohibited. A phase-out plan for hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) is being enforced; the ultimate prohibition of such substances is aimed at in 2040.
