Uruguay has introduced a proposal for a MERCOSUR Technical Regulation on hydrogen vehicles and fuel cells. This regulation aims to ensure the safety of compressed hydrogen storage systems and their components in vehicles manufactured or imported within the MERCOSUR member states. The proposal is based on the UN Regulation No. 134, which sets uniform provisions for the type approval of motor vehicles with regard to the safety performance of hydrogen vehicles, under the 1958 Agreement of WP.29.
