Avaaz reaction to the One Planet Summit
"The One Planet Summit is showing that world leaders are starting to wake up and realizing that biodiversity loss is a threat to our food security, is making us vulnerable to pandemics and will undermine any progress to stabilize our climate.
While the 30% goal by 2030 represents a doubling of the land mass under formal protection, and would therefore be a major step in the right direction, it doesn't go far enough: scientists say we need to protect at very least half the planet to address the loss of biodiversity by 2030, and such protection can only be done with the leadership and full consultation with indigenous peoples, fully respecting their rights and listening to their wisdom. Fortress protection is not the solution, is part of the problem.
