The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has opened a call for comments and evidence on the substance 1,4-dioxane, as well as substances and mixtures containing it as a constituent or an impurity. The purpose of the call for comments and evidence is to gather information to support the development of Annex XV restriction dossiers or other related documents. The information gathered will be used to inform the development of future restriction proposals and guidelines on restriction entries.

The consultation period started on April 20, 2023 and will end on June 20, 2023. Interested parties are invited to provide their input and express their views and concerns in the preparatory phase of the restriction proposal.

1,4-dioxane is a chemical compound that is primarily used as a solvent and as a stabilizer for chlorinated solvents, such as trichloroethylene and perchloroethylene. It can also be used as a solvent in some paint strippers, varnishes, and waxes. In addition, it can be present as an impurity in certain consumer products, such as shampoos, detergents, and cosmetics. This is because 1,4-dioxane is a byproduct of the process used to make certain ingredients, such as sodium laureth sulfate, which is commonly used as a foaming agent in personal care products. However, its presence as an impurity in consumer products is usually limited to trace amounts.
