Unacceptable extensions for the approval of highly toxic pesticides: German environmental aid goes to the European Union court

Berlin, February 22, 2024 : Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH) has filed a lawsuit with the Court of the European Union against the extension of the approval of the environmentally harmful herbicide active ingredient S-Metolachlor. A request from the DUH to review the provisional extension until November 2024 had previously been rejected. In the meantime, the EU Commission has decided not to renew the approval for S-metolachlor due to health and ecological concerns. Whether the contested extension was legal is still an open question - as is a fundamental decision with regard to other highly toxic active ingredients.
