On November 7, 2017, the industry groups Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR) and the American Chemistry Council (ACC) published the “2016 United States national postconsumer plastic bottle recycling report.” In 2016, 1.32 million metric tons of post-consumer plastic bottles were collected for recycling, marking a decline of 2.4% compared to 2015. The overall U.S. plastic bottle recycling collection rate decreased from 31.1% in 2015 to 29.7% in 2016. When looking at the different plastic materials, collection of polyethylene terephtahalate (PET) and high density polyehylene (HDPE) bottles decreased, while collection of polypropilene (PP) bottles increased (see tables below).
