On 22 July 2019, the first meeting of the newly established Committee on cooperation in the field of agriculture between Japan and the EU was held in Tokyo.

Recognising the EU and Japan’s mutual interest in promoting trade of agri-food products, as well as cooperating in the field of sustainable agriculture, the EU-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (Chapter 19) sets out a framework of bilateral cooperation that includes the establishment of the Committee on cooperation in the field of agriculture.

For the first meeting of this Committee, Japanese participants from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, and from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and EU participants from the European Commission’s Directorate General for Agriculture and Rural Development, and from the Delegation of the European Union to Japan met to exchange views and discuss agricultural policy in relation to the environment, climate change and organic farming.

The representatives of the EU and Japan confirmed to continue to work towards further cooperation in the field of agriculture.
