On May 22, 2017, the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine submitted an informal petition to add "Processed meat (consumption of)" to the list of chemicals known to the state to cause cancer.

On March 12, 2020, the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment declined to list “Processed meat (consumption of)” under Proposition 65. The reasons for the decision are set out in OEHHA’s response letter to the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.
